Abstract
要とせず、ラッチされた位置が安定に保持されるような
磁気的にプログラム可能でラッチ可能な光スイッチを提
供する。 【解決手段】 本発明の光スイッチングデバイスは、基
板に運動可能なように結合した磁気コンポーネントを含
む光反射ミラーからなる。磁気コンポーネントと総合作
用をすることによりミラーを動かすために1もしくは複
数のプログラム可能マグネットを備える。このプログラ
ム可能マグネットは、選択した位置の間ないし選択され
た位置にわたってミラーを動かし、ミラー位置を連続的
パワーを必要とせずに保持する。
Description
光スイッチに関し、特に、磁気的にプログラム可能でラ
ッチ可能な光スイッチに関する。
ステムのような現代の光波通信システムにおいて、透過
光の経路をスイッチングすることがしばしば必要とな
る。これを解決するため多くのアプローチが用いられて
いる。例として、スイッチングを光ファイバーの機械的
運動により行う方法がある(文献、P.G.hale et al.,El
ectronic Lett.,vol.12,p.388,1976およびY.Ohmori et
al.,Appl.Optics,vol 17,p.3531,1978を参照。)。また
スイッチングは、ファラデー回転に基づいても行うこと
ができる(文献、M.Shirasaki et al.,Appl.Optics,Vol
23 p.3271,1984を参照。)。
システムに対して特に魅力的ではあるが、その潜在能力
を未だ達成していない(文献、Tanaka et al.米国特許
第4498730号公報、L.Y.Lin et al,IEEE Photonics Tech
nology Lett.,Vol. 10 p. 525,1998、R.A.Miller et a
l.,Optical Eng.,Vol.36,p.1399,1997、J.W.Judy et a
l.,Sensors and Actuators,Vol.A53,p.392,1996を参
照。)。反射ミラーを用いるスイッチは、それらが自由
空間光透過を用い大規模光クロス接続へと拡張する潜在
性があるので好都合である。また、それらは通常、静電
的、圧電的または電磁気的作動手段を用いてミラーを移
動ないし回転させ光路を変える。

すために1もしくは複数のプログラム可能マグネットを
備える。このプログラム可能マグネットは、選択した位
置の間ないし選択された位置にわたってミラーを動か
し、ミラー位置を連続的パワーを必要とせずに保持す
る。以下において、例示的なクロス接続および2×2ス
イッチを説明する。

は、マグネット要素15および制御ソレノイド16を備
える。ミラー10は、所望の出力方向(例えば、特定の
導波路チャネル、光アンプ、光検出器など)へと入光信
号(例えば、レーザや導波路からのビーム)の経路を変
化させる。

15の周りに直接巻かれた絶縁処理ワイヤー、あるいは
マグネットの周りにらせん状に配置された細いリソグラ
フィで定まった薄膜導体パターン(導体とマグネットの
間に細い絶縁層が配置される)とすることができる。

は10〜10-4秒の範囲である。印加される電流パルス
の形は、正弦波的(sinusoidal)、矩形波的、あるいは不
規則的とすることができる。

て調整することができる。適当なマグネットの例として
は、Fe−Cr−Co、Fe−Al−Ni−Co(Al
nico)、Cu−Ni−Fe(Cunife)、Co−
Fe−V(Vicalloy)がある。このプログラム
可能なマグネットのための保持性の所望の範囲は、通
常、500 Oeより下であり、好ましくは100 Oe
よりも下である。これは、ソレノイドパルス場を用いる
再磁化によるプログラミングを容易にするためである。
残留磁化の安定性を維持するため、また、ストレイ(st
ray)磁場による逆磁化に対抗するための安定性のため
に、保持性は通常、約10 Oeよりも上であり、好ま
しくは、約30 Oeより上である。

いて残留磁化を再プログラミングすることが難しくなる
からである。

せレンズ(もしくはミラー)を用いて、ビームを入力フ
ァイバーCから出力ファイバーBへと動かすのに用いる
ことができる。

- 【請求項1】 (A)少なくとも1つの光入力路と、 (B)少なくとも1つの光出力路と、 (C)前記入力路と前記出力路の間に配置され、磁気要

の光ファイバーからなることを特徴とする請求項1記載
の光スイッチングデバイス。 - 【請求項5】 前記少なくとも1つの光出力路は、複数
の光ファイバーからなることを特徴とする請求項1記載
の光スイッチングデバイス。 - 【請求項6】 前記ミラーは、弾性的支持メンバーによ
り前記基板に運動可能なように結合していることを特徴
とする請求項1記載の光スイッチングデバイス。 - 【請求項7】 前記第2位置は、前記出力路への信号を
減衰するように前記光出力路とはアライメントがずれて
いることを特徴とする請求項1記載の光スイッチングデ
バイス。 - 【請求項8】 (A)光入力路のアレイと、 (B)光出力路のアレイと、 (C)前記光入力路のアレイと前記光出力路のアレイの
間に配置する光反射ミラーのアレイとを有し、 各ミラーは磁気要素を備え、基板上に運動可能なように
取り付けられ、各ミラーに対して、前記磁気要素との相
互作用によりミラーを動かすための1もしくは複数のプ
ログラム可能でラッチ可能なマグネットを備え、ミラー
の位置を連続的なパワーなしで制御することができるこ
とを特徴とする光クロス接続スイッチングデバイス。 - 【請求項9】 前記光入力路のアレイは、光ファイバー
の線形アレイからなり、 前記光出力路のアレイは、光ファイバーの線形アレイか
らなり、 前記光反射ミラーのアレイは、前記ミラーの二次元アレ
イからなることを特徴とする請求項8記載の光クロス接
続スイッチングデバイス。 - 【請求項10】 (A)少なくとも2つのアライメント
した光路の対と、ここで、 各対における光路は、割り込みがない場合に、一方の光
路からの光が他方の光路へと透過するように位置合わせ
していて、 (B)各対の光路の間に配置される少なくとも1つの光
反射ミラーとを有し、各ミラーは、磁気要素を備え、基
板上に運動可能なように取り付けられ、各ミラーに対し
て、前記磁気要素との相互作用により前記ミラーを運動
させるため、1もしくは複数のプログラム可能でラッチ
可能なマグネットを備え、前記光路の対の間の透過を可
能にする位置と、前記対の一方における光路から前記対
の他方における光路へと光を反射する位置との間をミラ
ー位置が切り替わることができることを特徴とする2×
2光スイッチングデバイス。 - 【請求項11】 前記アライメントした光路の対は、ア
ライメントした光ファイバーの少なくとも1つの対から
なることを特徴とする請求項10記載の2×2光スイッ
チングデバイス。
