Abstract

Grain-oriented iron-silicon foil is mfd. as hot-rolled strip contg. 2.2-4.5% Si, 3-35 ppm. boron, 30-70 ppm. N2 in the ratio of 1-15 pts. per pt. of boron, and Mn and S with ratio Mn:S below 1.8; the strip is heated to obtain at least partial recrystallisation and then cold rolled to final size without reheating and finally given a heat-treatment to develop a sec. recrystallisation texture (110) 001 . The steel pref. contains 0.01% max. S, 0.01% max. Mn, 5-25 ppm. B; or 0.03% S, 0.03% Mn, 5-15 ppm. B; or 0.04% S, 0.04% Mn, 5-15 ppm. B; or 0.05% S, 0.05% Mn, and 5-10 ppm. B. Highly oriented silicon electrical steel is obtd. with high magnetic permeability in the rolling direction, using a process which has fewer stages and is less expensive than conventional processes.
