1462419 Pipe couplings J VANDERHOVEN 24 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 27927/74 Heading F2G A self-locking pipe coupling 1 comprises ferrules 2, 3 into each of which a pipe end is inserted, each ferrule having an abutment 5; a cylindrical part 14 with an internal diameter only slightly greater than the external diameter of the pipe 4 inserted therein and an internal annular recess 6 tapering towards the open end 8 of ferrule 3, in which are located toroidal seal 9 and spring 10, the spring being nearest to open end 8. This arrangement allows pipe end 4 to be inserted easily into end 8, spring 10 and seal 9 and to carry seal 9 and spring 10 towards rear end 7 of recess 6. The penetration of pipe 4 is limited by abutment 5 and axial movement away from abutment 5 causes seal 9 and spring 10 to move down the tapering wall of recess 6 towards open end 8 and spring 10 to lock around pipe 4 and against the recess wall retaining pipe 4 in ferrule 3. The spring may be a closed coil having an internal diameter less than the external diameter of the pipe and may have a reinforcing wire within its turns, the turns all being of the same diameter and wound close together but not touching one another. Pipe 4 may be released from the coupling by simultaneously pulling and rotating it in one direction within ferrule 3 which laterally crushes the turns of spring 10 releasing its grip on the pipe. In alternative forms the coupling may have more than two ferrules of identical or differing cross-section and each ferrule may have more than one seal. [GB1462419A]
