Abstract

1,117,987. Tube couplings. L. & L. MFG. CO. 2 Nov., 1966, No. 49199/66. Heading F2G. A self-flaring tube coupling comprises an externally-threaded tubular coupling body 10 provided with a counterbore 18 having a gradually-convergent throat 22 extending axially inwardly from a steeply convergent mouth 24 and terminating at a cylindrical wall or bore portion 34, a tube-flaring ferrule 26 seated in the counterbore and having a frusto-conical surface 42 extending outwardly and radially spaced from the cylindrical bore portion to define an annular tube end-receiving annulus 45, and a sleeve 52 received on a tube end T and having a steeply-sloping face 68 which is adapted to engage initially the counterbore mouth when a coupling nut 50 is tightened so that the sleeve bends or contracts about a reduced cross-section portion 62 to force an annular angled projection 58 on the inside of the sleeve into the tube prior to any substantial relative movement therebetween. Further tightening of the nut forces the inner end of the sleeve down the convergent throat and into tighter engagement with the tube whilst causing the tube end to be drawn over and flared on the ferrule 26. The inward movement of the tube end is limited by its abutment with a stop wall 40. The conical surface 42 merges into a radiused surface 44 which curls the tube end outwardly. The coupling is suitable for connecting thin or medium walled tubes as shown or, by use of a different ferrule, thick-walled tubes, Fig. 4 (not shown). Specific angles are stated for the various convergent and angled surfaces.
