Abstract

827,241. Pipe couplings. AMES IRRIGATION PTY Ltd. May 9, 1957 [May 28, 1956], No. 14816/57. Class 99(1). In pipe line systems particularly for irrigation a female coupler member 14 provided with parallel grooves 28, 29 on its inner wall has a larger diameter than a male coupler 12 provided with a groove 20 spaced from the end 21 such that the distance between the grooves 28, 29 is smaller, and the first groove 28, nearer the end of the member 14, is aligned to overlie the groove 20 so as to receive a flexible locking member 32 which is inserted through an opening 30 in the groove 28, the second groove 29 containing a rubber &c. 0-ring 31. The male part 12 is formed integrally with the end of a pipe 10 or 11 and is coupled to a sleeve 13 formed with the female couplers 14 in which the pipes are inserted and a sprinkler riser 16. The 0-ring 31 is used as a sealing gasket. The locking member 32 may be a coil spring as shown which is fed into a single access opening 30 somewhat larger in diameter than the groove 28 and having a raised rim 33 to facilitate insertion. The spring 32 may have a handle or may have an end formed to be gripped by pliers and if desired may have a locking device to engage some of the coils on the opposite end of the spring ; alternatively, a solid rod or hollow tube of nylon or other synthetic plastic material may be used instead of a spring. A further modification is shown in Fig. 6 where a U-shaped rigid rod 40 has coil springs 41, 42 at each end, the diameters of which are less than that of the rod 40 on which they are secured. Two access holes are necessary for this arrangement which is used as shown in Fig. 5, the handle 40. facilitating insertion and withdrawal. In Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), a pipe section has a male coupler at one end a female coupler at the other so that sections can be connected together, the sprinkler outlets being omitted.
