Abstract

1355720 Screened cables AMERICAN CAN CO 23 Nov 1971 [8 Jan 1971] 54263/71 Heading H1A The seam of the corrugated metallic sheath of an electric cable is sealed by a layer of a thermoplastic adhesive (preferably a fiberÀforming polyamide) that completely fills the voids created by the corrugations. As shown (Fig. 1) a corrugated metal strip 10 is bent at 18 into a U- shaped channel in which the cable core 20 is located. At 24, one arm of the strip 10 is bent on to the cable as shown in Fig. 3, and the surfaces 27, 28 coated with a primer. The surface 27 is heated at 34 before the adhesive 36 is extruded on to it in the form of a molten bead, of about half the seam width, and preferably twice as thick as the depth of the sheath corrugations to ensure complete sealing. A station 40 closes the seam as shown in Fig. 7, and a plastics jacket 50 completes the cable. The seam may be formed around a bead of adhesive before heating takes place, or the metal strip may be pretreated to provide a bead of adhesive along one edge, and then bent up around the cable as at 18, Fig. 1.
