Abstract

A seal for the well of a vehicle door having a vertically sliding window comprises a covering member (20) formed of rubber with a flock coating member (12) of L-shaped cross-section e.g. of rubber or thermoplastics material is bonded to that side of the sheet metal skin (10) of the door which is remote from the window pane (24). The member (12) has a recess (18) in which a projection (28) formed on the covering member (20) is matingly received. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Seal for the opening of a window in a vehicle door The invention relates to a seal for the opening of a window in a vehicle door, comprising a covering profile attached to the sheet metal of the door and engaging the window pane.
In traditional seals, the covering profile is pressed onto the lower edge of the window opening. In order to achieve sufficiently great clamping forces, clamping metal guide rails are fitted which, however, in the course of time rub through the varnish and thus come into direct contact with the sheet metal of the door. Because of this defects generally occur in these places so that intensified rusting cannot be avoided.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide a seal which avoids this disadvantage, by means of which the above mentioned damage to the varnish is reliably avoided.
According to the invention there is provided a seal for the opening of a window in a vehicle door, comprising a covering profile attached to the sheet metal of the door and engaging the window pane, and an angular profile positioned on the side of the said sheet metal remote from the window pane and joined to the covering profile by virtue of the interlocking shapes thereof.
The advantages obtained with the invention are derived particularly from the fact that the covering profile does not need to contain any metallic intermediate layers, so that metal-tometal contact is avoided. The damage to the varnish mentioned above can thereby be reliably avoided. The assembly stage is also simplified since relatively high forces had hitherto to be applied to press on conventional sealing profiles. High forces were particularly necessary for bending the metallic intermediate layers. Furthermore, in the present invention the otherwise open upper edge of the door sheet metal is tightly enclosed from all sides, so that dampness or corrosive gases cannot penetrate therein. Thus, corrosion in these places can be prevented even when the vehicle has become old.
The angular profile is preferably bonded to the sheet metal of the door in order to ensure a secure join which can be assembled simply.
The join between the angular profile and the covering profile can be effected, for example, by means of a recess into which a projection of the opposite part, being moulded correspondingly, is pressed in.
In a preferred embodiment, the open surface of the angular profile is provided with a glossy film in order to give this surface more protection and also to improve its appearance.
The angular profile can be made of rubber or a thermoplastic material, preferably polyvinyl chloride, while the covering profile is a socalled RT-profile, i.e. a rubber profile, the surface of which, engaging the pane, is provided with a flock coating.
The invention is described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a section through a seal according to the invention.
The drawing shows the conventional sheet metal 1 of a door which forms the lower edge of the window opening. This sheet metal 1 has an L-shaped, external portion 10 and also a portion lOb which is joined flat therewith, for example by soldering.
An angular profile 1 2 is located in the interior space of the L-shaped portion 10 of the sheet metal 1, the angular profile being secured to the exterior of the straight-line portion 1 0a by an adhesive tape 14.
The free external surface of the angular profile 12 is coated with a glossy film 16.
The lower end of the angular profile 12, which preferably consists of rubber or a thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride, rests on a cross-piece 10c of the L-shaped portion 10 and an upper, bent-up portion 12a of the angular profile projects over the upper edge of the sheet metal 1 so that the upper edge is completely covered on the outside.
There is a recess 1 8 in the external surface of the bent-up portion 12a, which has a narrow opening 1 8a widening inwardly into a space 1 8b having an approximately circular cross section.
After the angular profile 1 2 is positioned on the sheet metal 1, i.e. on the L-shaped portion 10, an RT (rubber/textile) profile 20 is secured onto the sheet metal 1 and the angular profile 12.
In cross section, this RT-profile 20 is approximately L-shaped with a straight-line portion 20a fitting onto the portion 1 Ob and with a cross-piece 20b, having a surface which is provided with a flock coating 22 and engages the external surface of a pane 24. At the lower end of the straight-line portion 20a of the RT-profile 20, there is a projection 20c which runs upwards and to the left as shown in the drawing, a gap 26 being defined between the projection 20c and the exterior surface of the straight-line portion 20a. The lower, slightly bent part of the portion lOb is introduced into this gap 26.
The upper, slightly bent end of the straightline portion 20a is also provided with a flock coating 22 on its surface facing the pane 24 and also comprises a cross piece 22drunning to the left which fits onto the upper end of the angular profile 1 2. A projection 28 is formed on the lower side of the cross piece 22d, the shape of the projection corresponding to the shape of the recess 1 8. This projection 28 thus has a head of an approximately circular cross section, the transition region between the head and the cross-piece 22d having a width which is slightly less than the diameter of the head.
When assembling the RT-profile 20 onto the sheet metal 1 and the angular profile 12, the projection 28 is pressed into the recess 1 8 and at the same time the lower end of the straight-line portion lOb is pressed into the gap 26 in order to secure the RT-profile 20.
The lower cross piece 20b of the RT-profile 20 engages the surface of the pane 24 in the manner illustrated.
