Abstract

1,247,715. Sheathing cables. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 18 Oct., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967], No. 49470/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B3 and H1] A metallic sheath 22 (primarily intended as a moisture barrier) enclosing the core of a cable 20 is formed with its overlapping edges bonded together by a non-metallic adherent material to form a seam 40, the exposed outer surface of the sheath being free of the adherent material. The adherent material may be a thermoplastic polymerization product containing carbonyl groups (e.g. a copolymer of ethylene acrylic acid) and is solid at ambient temperatures. The bond is formed by heating the sheath, either during the extrusion of a thermoplastics jacket 28 or by induction heating. The adherent material may be applied either in tape form between the overlapping edges of the sheath or as a coating on all or part of the inside face of the sheath. The cable may be a coaxial cable with its conductors 32, 36 separated by insulating spacing discs 34, or may comprise a number of individually insulated conductors (223) within an insulating sleeve (225) around which the metal sheath (222) which is corrugated, is arranged (Fig. 8, not shown).
