Abstract
cable having a screen conductor (16) formed from a wound strip whose overlapping edges are electrically isolated and sealed by a plastic ribbon (18). A further metal strip (24) overlaps the junction providing protection against contamination of the extrusion head. The form of the insulating strip is such that water ingress into the dielectric (14) is minimised, improving ageing characteristics. The insulating ribbon has a soft wax having suitable electrical characteristics or 'Telcompound' applied to both its surfaces increasing the sealing effect under pressure and taking up conductor edge irregularities. The ribbon may be replaced by a suitable conductor, such an indium, forming a complete electrical seal.
