Abstract

1328296 Heat insulating slabs SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 22633/71 Heading B5N Heat insulating slabs for the production of doors comprises two metal cover sheets 1, 2 each bonded to a layer of heat-insulating material 3, 4, the two layers of heat-insulating material being joined to one another only in a central region so that outside this region each heat insulating layer and its associated metal cover sheet can expand and contract independently of each other, thereby preventing buckling of the slab when exposed to different temperatures on different faces. The heat-insulating layers 3, 4 are preferably separated by a sheet 5, e.g. silicone release paper or smooth polymeric film which facilitates relative movement of the heat-insulating layers, the layers being united through one or more openings into the sheet. Alternatively, the heat-insulating layers may be united to the separating sheet 5 only in the central area. The metal sheets are preferably of aluminium and the heat-insulating layers may be of closed cell foamed granules of polystyrene united by a bonding agent. The slab may be made by forming a layer of loose foamed granules of polystyrene on a metal sheet, wetting the granules with a bonding agent, e.g. an epoxy resin impregnated with a hardener so that the granules become coated with the bonding agent. A fine powder such as mineral powder may then be applied to the layer and the layer is then rendered even and a separating sheet having one or more openings in its central area is laid over the granules. A second layer of granules and bonding agent is formed on the separating sheet and then the second covering sheet of metal is applied and the whole assembly is pressed to form the slab. Preferably the pressing is effected at elevated temperature to accelerate the setting of the bonding agent. [GB1328296A]
