Abstract

Relatively thin wall or shell structures are composed of a primary layer incorporating >=1 cloth of mineral fibres immersed in an org. binder resin matrix, and a secondary layer of an org. or mineral binder matrix contg. discrete filler particles. Pref. the secondary layer is sandwiched between two primary layers or fills 'U' section channels made of primary layer material. Pref. the primary layer involves glass fibre cloth in an epoxy resin matrix. The binder for the secondary layer is pref. also epoxy, but cement-based binders are also claimed. If secondary binder is not epoxy based, pref. an epoxy resin coating is used to enhance bonding between the two layers. Specif. structural shells comprise panels of primary layer material upon which a series of 'U' section channels filled with the secondary material are laid with the open face bonded to the primary panel. Epoxy resins are prefd. for good bonding characteristics and negligible shrinkage during curing.
