Abstract

1,215,501. Marble faced laminates. T. P. BOURKE, EARL OF MAYO. 18 Jan., 1968 [19 Jan., 1967], No. 2681/68. Heading B5N. A marble-faced composite surface element comprises a marble lamina 4 to one surface of which is adhesively bonded a multicellular metal core 1, e.g. an aluminium honeycomb of substantially greater thickness than said marble lamina, said core having a skin 2 of tenacious sheet material of substantially greater tensile strength than said core, e.g. resin impregnated fibre glass or sheet aluminium bonded to the surface of the core remote from said lamina. In a preferred embodiment, a further skin 3 is interposed between the core and the marble lamina. Specified adhesives are epoxy and polyester resins. In one method of making the element, the skins are applied to the core, the resultant backing laid on a support surface and adhesive and the marble lamina applied to the surface of the backing, pressure and/or heat being optionally applied during the setting of the adhesive. In an alternative method, the backing may be adhesively secured to a slab of marble and the marble lamina sawn therefrom. The elements may be mounted in metal frames.
