A prestressed laminated timber product comprises metallic reinforcement between timber laminµ, the reinforcement, depending on the state of stress which will exist in various parts of the laminate, being in the form of linear, zigzag or curved rods, tubes, wires or strips, or in the form of gauzes, sheets or plates, and at least in tension zones, being bonded to the laminae with a thermo-setting adhesive and being prestressed by heating the reinforcement but not the timber to cause its expansion and the setting of the adhesive. The reinforcement, when in the form of rods, tubes, wires or strips, may be a press fit in pre-cut grooves in the timber. As shown, the laminate is assembled in a press with a thermo-setting adhesive disposed around the reinforcement and a cold-setting adhesive disposed between the laminµ. The reinforcement in the tension zones is caused to expand by heating; the heating may be by direct electrical means, by high-frequency induction means, or in the case of tubes by circulating hot gases through them. The heat causes the thermo-setting adhesive to set and effect a bond between the reinforcement and the laminµ whilst the reinforcement is in its expanded state. Pressure is applied either prior to heating or just prior to setting. The reinforcement in the compression zones is heated to set the adhesive and the laminate is removed from the press and the cold-setting adhesive is allowed to set to effect a direct bond between the laminµ. The ends of the reinforcing bars 2 protrude outside the laminate and serve as electrical contacts and as a means for applying an axial tensile force when this is required. They may be left on the finished product to serve as an anchor, or may be removed. The reinforcements in the tension zones, if not located in grooves, may be provided with projections which on the application of pressure bite into the laminµ. The thermo-setting adhesive may be a phenol, phenol-resorcinol, urea or melamine glue and the cold-setting adhesive may be a resorcinol-formaldehyde glue.
