Abstract

Eνα υλικό φακών επαφής μικράς περιεκτικότητας σε ύδωρ το οποίον έχει μεγάλη διαπερατότητα από το οξυγόνο μια μικροτέρα περιεκτικότητα ύδατος και ελαττωμένο μέγεθος μήτρας πολυμερούς εξασφαλίζουν το απαιτούμενο Ο2 δια τον κερατοειδή χιτώνα αλλά δεν απομακρύνουν δια μυζήσεως δια τριχοειδών δυνάμεων ύδωρ από τον οφθαλμό ούτε επιτρέπουν την διαπέρασιν και απόθεσιν επί των φακών πρωτεϊνης ή άλλων συστατικών των δακρύων. 'Ενας τέτοιος φακός κατασκευάζεται δια πολυμερισμού και δημιουργίας σταυροειδών δεσμών εις ένα προπολυμερές το οποίον περιέχει μια κυκλική πολυόλη με τομείς πολυαλκυλαιθέρος που περιέχουν σλκηρυνομένους τομείς. Οι κυκλικές πολυόλες αποτελούνται από αλκοξυλιωθείσα γλυκόζη ή σακχαρόζη οι οποίες στη συνέχεια αντιδρούν με μια ισοκυανική ένωση προς παραγωγή ενός προπολυμερούς το οποίον μπορεί να σκληρυνθεί δια υπεριώδους φωτός. Το προπολυμερές ακολούθως τοποθετείται σε ένα καλούπι και πολυμερίζεται δια εκθέσεως του εις το υπεριώδες φως.
