Abstract

998,807. Printing processes. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. April 27, 1962 [April 28, 1961], No. 16157/62. Heading B6C. [Also in Division H1] A process of treating the surface of a polyfluorocarbon shaped structure with a corona discharge to improve its printability, comprises introducing an atmosphere of nitrogen or an inert gas (such as helium) containing less than 1000 p.p.m. (preferably 10 p.p.m.) by volume of oxygen between the surface and the corona discharge electrode. The polyfluorocarbon can be prepared from a monomer containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms and may be (1) a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and at least 5% hexafluoropropylene; (2) polychlorotrifluoroethyene; (3) polyvinylfluoride; (4) polyvinylidene fluoride; (5) polytetrafluoroethylene; or (6) polyhexafluoropropylene. The shaped structure can be a film or tube. The corona discharge voltage may vary from 100 volts up to pulsating voltages of 200,000, preferably greater than 500; the current can be 0À1-1À5-5À5 amps.; the frequency can range from 60 to 500 kc., preferably 300-500 kc.; the duration can be 0À1-0À4-5 seconds. The treatment chamber is a tube wrapped outside with lead foil and with bushings through which the structure is introduced into and out of the discharge.
