Abstract

984,963. Treating gases with electric discharges. IONON G.m.b.H. Nov. 24, 1961 [Nov. 28, 1960], No. 42060/61. Heading H5H. A reactive gas is passed through the positive column of a glow discharge maintained under such conditions of applied voltage, gas pressure and electrode spacing that the energy in the positive column is greater than that normally occurring. The apparatus shown comprises an apertured anode 1 and a circular cathode 4 cooled by a stream of liquid 6. Gas 2 is passed through the anode 1 and positive column 3 and leaves through a tube 12 without contacting the negative glow 5. A stream of liquid 11 passing through a jacket 10 maintains the positive column 3 at an optimum temperature for the reaction concerned. Operating characteristics of the glow discharge (Figs. 1 to 7, not shown) and a mathematical analysis are given.
