Abstract

Peroxides of the general formula <FORM:0998682/C2/1> in which (H-Ar) is a hydroaromatic or alkyl hydroaromatic radical, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and X is alkaryl, an aryl or an alkyl group or a hydroaromatic or alkylhydroaromatic radical are made by the reaction of (i) a tertiary hydroperoxide having an hydroaromatic group, of the formula <FORM:0998682/C2/2> in which R and (H-Ar) have the same significance as above, with (ii) an aliphatic and/or an aromatic tertiary alcohol of the formula XC(R)2OH, the reaction being carried out in the presence of perchloric acid and the absence of other acids. The tertiary hydroperoxide may be isopropylcyclohexane-, p-menthane-, or pinane hydroperoxide. The reaction may be effected at 0-95 DEG C., preferably with continuous operation, the acid concentration being kept constant by continually adding small amounts of acid.
