Abstract
A method for partially coating a metallic ribbon, e.g. of beryllium brass, by vapour deposition in a vacuum chamber A, Fig. 1, comprises winding the ribbon on a member 19 of circular cross-section so that each layer partially covers the one already laid down and evaporating the coating material (e.g. Ag) by applying heat to receptacles 25. The member 19 is preferably in the form of a frustrum of a cone of small angle so that the separate layers of the ribbon are substantially parallel to the axis of member 19. In a further embodiment, <PICT:0998573/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0998573/C6-C7/2> Fig. 4, the ribbon is continuously fed from spool 104 and the partially coated ribbon is taken up on spool 105 which is driven by motor 105a. If desired, rollers may be provided at the surface of member 19 so that the ribbon will not suffer from abrasion therewith. In both methods a screen 30 may be provided to catch the impurities given off during the first stages of evaporation of the coating material.
