Abstract

<PICT:0936691/IV(a)/1> Insulating tape such as polyethylene terephthalate is coated with a first layer of a metal such as aluminium and a second layer of a lubricating oil or grease in a vapour deposition process in which the whole apparatus is enclosed in a vacuum. As shown in the drawing the tape is unwound from a roller 1 in a vacuum chamber 8, coated with aluminium by a metal vaporizer 3, one surface of the tape being in contact with a cooler 4 and a silicone oil coating is then applied by an oil evaporator 5. The oil layer may be formed on one or both sides of the tape and may alternatively be applied by printing or brushing.
