[Also in Division H1] A variable voltage is obtained from a winding with tappings connected to substantially equally spaced contacts by moving along these contacts a brush having an appreciable resistance between its two ends and being long enough to touch at least two of the contacts at all times. The brush may have an insulating body portion with a conductive portion to slide over the contacts, there being a sliding contact and slip ring arrangement for feeding out the output voltage. The voltage drop which the brush introduces between the contacts 12, it connects, can be substantially or partly offset by applying across at least part of the brush a voltage obtained via slip rings 42, 44 from a secondary 46 on the main winding, the output voltage now being taken from the centre tap of this secondary. The winding may be arranged in a straight line (Fig. 4), with the brush long enough to touch four contacts in certain positions and at least three contacts in all positions of the slider 54. The device may be used as a fine adjustment in association with a coarse voltage stepping apparatus.
