Abstract
A powder for use in smooth bored mortars firing fin stabilized shells, contains at least 25% by weight of nitroglycerine, from 2% to 12% by weight of paraphenylene diamine or a mixture of non-substituted or substituted phenylene diamines, when at least 1% by weight of the powder is paraphenylene diamine, and from 1% to 4% by weight of an organic lead compound together with organic nitrates and small quantities of stabilizers and other substances affecting the combustion. The organic lead compounds specified are lead salicylate, lead stearate, lead acetate, lead phenyl ethyl and lead tetraethyl. A particular composition is given, in which other ingredients are nitrocellulose, carbon black, graphite, centralite, diphenylamine, dinitro - diphenylamine, ethylphenylene - urethanes, aluminium stearate, calcium stearate, paraffins, and alcohols.
