Abstract

1,190,001. Propellants. NITROCHEMIE G.m.b.H. 25 Feb., 1964 [20 March, 1963], No. 7897/64. Heading C1D. A solid propellant consists of up to 75% by weight of ammonium nitrate mixed with a binder which is an initially syrupy mixture of 0À5 to 3 parts by weight of a liquid or liquefied nitro or nitrated organic compound and 1 part by weight of a solid nitro or nitrated organic compound which is soluble or gelatinizable in the liquid component. The liquid component of the binder may be dinitrotoluene, N,N<SP>1</SP>-dinitro-N, N<SP>1</SP> - diethyloloxamidodinitrate, ethylenediamine dinitrate, acetyldinitroglycerine, or trimethylene glycol dinitrate; the solid component may be nitrocellulose, polyvinyl nitrate, nitrated monostyrene, or nitrated rubber or other elastomer. The propellant may also include an epoxy or polyester resin or " Thiokol " (Registered Trade Mark), glycerine triglycol ether as a plasticizer, barium nitrate and benzidine for increasing the burning rate, and active charcoal or carbon black to improve ignitibility. In examples, the ammonium nitrate has a small amount of calcium stearate added. Other ingredients additional to those mentioned above are ammonium dichromate, graphite, zinc stearate, methyl diphenyl urea, and lecithin. The components are kneaded together and extruded at above 32À5‹ C. The composition has a long hardening time and may be stored several days before extruding.
