Abstract
1277192 Propellant compositions C S CROSS (United States of America Secretary of The Army) 30 Dec 1965 55303/65 Heading C1D A propellant composition has as a binder a cured intimate mixture of nitrocellulose, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, a plasticizer and a cross-linking agent, the weight ratio of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene to nitrocellulose being from 1 : 8 to 3:1. Crosslinking may be effected with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate. The composition has improved low temperature properties and thermal stability and is made by mixing the specified components with an oxidizer and a fuel and curing, for example in a rocket motor case. Suitable plasticizers are nitroglycerine, hydroxyglycerol trinitrate, butane triol dinitrate, diethylene glycol dinitrate, triethylene glycol dinitrate, trimethylene glycol trinitrate, dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl sebacate, dibutyl succinate, dibutyl adipate, triacetin, ethyl diphenyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, and tetrazole derivatives. Organic oxidizers specified are PETN, RDX, HMX and tetranitrobutanes, and inorganic oxidizers are ammonium perchlorate, ammonium nitrate, and alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorates, perchlorates, and nitrates. Powdered Al, Zr, Li, Mg, B, or their hydrides or alloys may serve as fuel. Other additives are iron powder, lead salicylate, lead oxide, lead chromate, and lead stearate as burning rate modifiers, symmetrical diethyl diphenyl urea, resorcinol, and 2-nitrodiphenylamine as stabilizers, and zinc oxide, carbon black, titanium dioxide, candelilla wax and sericite as pigments and fillers.
