Abstract
1427697 Propellants HERCULES Inc 12 Aug 1969 15323/68 Heading C1D A solid propellant is made by mixing nitrocellulose, a solid oxidizer, a metal fuel, a plasticizer, and a diisocyanate blocked with phenolic end groupings, and then curing the mixture under conditions to effect unblocking of the diisocyanate and cross-linking of the nitrocellulose. Non-porous propellants may be formed even in the presence of small amounts of water. Many examples of suitable diisocyanates and substituted phenol blocking agents are given. In examples the ingredients are nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, ammonium perchlorate, metallic aluminium, resorcinol, MnO 2 , 2-nitrodiphenyl amine, dibutyl tin diacetate catalyst, and a prepolymer of polyglycol adipate and tolylene diisocyanate blocked with m-nitrophenol. Other ingredients referred to are ammonium, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal nitrates, chlorates, perchlorates, chromates, dichromates, and permanganates, RDX, HMX, PETN, dipentaerythritol hexanitrate, ethylene dinitramine, nitro-oxanilides, mannitol hexanitrate, nitroguanidine, TNT, lead dinitroresorcinates, further specified nitrate esters, triacetin, tributyl phosphate, beryllium and zirconium.
