Abstract
A powder for use in smooth bored mortars firing fin stabilized shells contains at least 25% nitroglycerine and from 2% to 12% by weight of paraphenylene diamine. It may also contain from 4% to 14% by weight of hexogen and amines in addition to paraphenylene diamine may be used to make up the 12% by weight, e.g. orthophenylene diamine, 1,4-diamino - 2 - nitrobenzene, and 1,4 - diamino-2,6-dinitrobenzene, provided at least 2% paraphenylene diamine is present. Other components may be added to the composition, e.g. graphite, calcium stearate, soot, ricinus oil, and rubber. An example is given of a composition containing nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, paraphenylene diamine, centralite and other stabilizers, and hexogen.
