Abstract

<PICT:0997307/C1/1> <PICT:0997307/C1/2> In the production of glass fibres in which molten glass is projected in the form of fine streams through orifices arranged in rows on the peripheral band of a rotating hollow body and the streams are transformed into fibres by the action of gaseous currents, the peripheral band is maintained at a substantially constant temperature throughout the whole of its height and the diameter of the orifices is given a decreasing value from the upper part of the band to the lower part so as to obtain fibres of substantially the same diameter. The hollow body 1 has a band 2 with orifices 3 decreasing in diameter, for example, at the top, two rows of 1.1 mm.; middle, 14 rows of 1.0 mm.; at the bottom, 4 rows of 0.9 mm. The molten glass is spread evenly over the band 2 from a distributer 4 having orifices 5, the distributer 4 rotating with the body 1. The streams 9 are attenuated by blast from an annular chamber 6 with slot 7 and the temperature of the band is maintained constant by a high frequency coil 8. In addition, as shown, a cooled screen 11 adjacent the slot 7 may be provided to assist in equalizing the temperature of the band 2 and to increase the velocity of the gaseous current. A further blowing ring 12 may direct, through orifice 13, a current of fluid to envelope the fibres produced. As shown in Fig. 3, the streams 9 from the largest diameter orifices A extend further and from the smallest orifices C a less distance than those through orifices B through the gaseous blast so that there is less entanglement of fibres. An upstanding tip 14 prevents diversion of the alternating gas to the space above the body 1. Specification 812,657 is referred to.
