834,385. Apparatus for making glass fibres. MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE SAINT-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY S. A., DES. June 5, 1958 [June 17, 1957], No. 17978/58. Class 56. An apparatus for making glass fibres comprises a hollow centrifuging body 1 whose periphery includes a peripheral band 2 having rows of projection apertures 3 through which the molten glass is centrifugally projected as streamlets by the rotation of the body at high speed, the emerging streamlets being subjected to the action of flame or hot gas so as to produce very fine fibres, the top part 8 of the band being arranged in the path of the current of flame or hot gas and being so shaped that the portion of the current striking it will be directed outwardly towards the main part of the current so as to limit its deviation towards the top of the body. The top of the band may be truncated or rounded and maybe provided with an obstacle above the body and in the vicinity of the band for preventing or reducing deviation of flame or gas towards the top of the body. The obstacle may be an annular boss 7 on the body 1 or on the wall of an associated combustion chamber or burner which may penetrate into the interior of a recess in the wall of the chamber or burner, or in the top of the body. The band may have a variable conicity of which the angle made with the vertical increases from the top to the bottom of the band. The band may be formed of several superposed truncated cone surfaces 2a, 2b, 2c of which the angle made with the vertical increases from top to bottom. The band may have internal stiffening e.g. annular horizontal ribs 12, vertical ribs 13, or ribs directed along generatrices, and the external surface of the band may have ridges or protuberances, and may be in the form of tiers 10 each having one or more rows of apertures 3. The horizontal distance d between the tiers may increase with the slope of the band and the apertures may have a shape flared out towards the inside of the body, the band being formed of two concentric jointed elements 14, 17, the inner of of which 14 has the flared out inlets 15 of the apertures 3. The body may be of variable thickness, the thickness being greater at the bottom than at the top. The bottom 11 of the body may be inclined to the horizontal at an angle of 10 degrees and may have a profile similar to that of the top 6 of the body.
