Abstract

PURPOSE:In the production of glass fiber through the blow-off process by the use of a high-speed rotor, the speed of high-temperature gas flow to be blown to the linear line of melted glass is set in a specific range to produce extremely fine glass fiber with high productivity. CONSTITUTION:A disk rotor 1 made from ceramic or heat-resistant steel is made to rotate at a high speed and a flow of melted glass 2 is fed to the center, blown off with the centrifugal force to form linear fibers 3. The linear fibers are drawn by the high-speed and high-temperature gas flow jetted from a ring high-speed burner 4 mounted around the disk rotor to form extremly fine glass fiber 5. At this time, the speed of the high-temperature and high-speed gas flow is set to 200-600m/sec and the temperature is set preferably to 1,400-1,800 deg.C. Consequently, glass fiber of less than 1.5mu diameter is obtained and the product is used to produce slate as a substitutent for asbestos.
