Abstract
935,723. Making glass &c. fibres. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Oct. 31, 1961 [Nov. 3, 1960], No. 38871/61. Class 56. In the drawing of glass filaments from streams of molten glass or other thermoplastic materials through orifices 15 aligned in a plurality of rows in the bottom of a bushing 13, a plurality of individual jets of a cooling gas, e.g. air, are directed between the rows of filaments just below, and from at least one side of, the bushing 13. A water-cooled member 34 supports an air-supply header 32 on which cooling nozzles 36, which comprise small hypodermic needles or tubes, are mounted. Where the cooling jets are directed from both sides of the bushing 13, the nozzles 36 may alternate as shown in Fig. 6, or may be directly opposed. An annular form of header is also described. The rate of flow of the cooling gas may be constantly increased during a run to provide yardage compensation. The bushing 13 is electrically heated.
