Abstract

<PICT:1021855/C6-C7/1> A process for the treatment of molten metal by blowing from above with a low velocity gas stream containing a powdered or granulated material in suspension therein and also with a high velocity gas stream, wherein said high velocity gas stream is surrounded by an annular curtain of gas formed by either a further stream of gas having an annular cross-section surrounding said high velocity gas stream or by a plurality of further streams of gas arranged in a circle around said high velocity gas stream, said further stream or streams having a lower velocity than that of said high velocity gas stream, and said annular curtain of gas diverging outwardly at an angle to the axis of said high velocity gas stream. The volume of said further stream or streams is preferably less than that of the high velocity stream, e.g. the further stream or streams forming 20-30% of the total volume of gas flow and the high velocity stream forming 50-60% thereof. In the form shown the low pressure gas carrying the powder passes through the centre tube 10, and the high pressure gas passes between the concentric tubes, 10 and 11, to pass through the annular opening 17 so forming the high pressure gas stream and also through the series of apertures 18 surrounding the annular opening thereby producing the curtain of gas surrounding the high pressure gas stream. The gas streams may comprise such gases as oxygen, enriched air, oxygen-steam or oxygen-carbon dioxide mixtures &c. The high-velocity gas stream may issue from the lance at supersonic velocities.
