<PICT:1035032/C1/1> In the production of glass and like fibres in which molten glass 12 is thrown from a rotor 1 and passed towards an annular curtain of a gaseous medium formed by jets of the gas flowing from a number of openings 8, in a blast ring 6, the melt 14 is directed to that part of the gas curtain in which the jets have not yet flowed together so that the melt 14 is drawn into the flowing gaseous medium to form fibres, the edge of the rotor 1 being closely adjacent the ring 6. There may be a second concentric curtain of gas through opennings 9, acting as a protective shield and to form fibres of any particles of the melt passing through the first curtain. A number of different arrangements of openings are disclosed. In particular, the angles of the openings 8 and 9 may be arranged so that the gas curtains diverge by up to 30 degrees.
