Abstract
996,989. Lapping. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Aug. 31, 1962 [Aug. 31, 1961], No. 33624/62. Heading B3D. [Also in Division H1] At least a part of one face of a semi-conductor unit is lapped using a solid lapping agent in glycerine. An aluminium disc 3 is laid upon a molybdenum disc 2 and a wafer of P-type silicon 4 applied to the aluminium surface followed by a gold-antimony foil 5. These parts are compacted in graphite powder and heated under pressure in an alloying furnace. A silver foil 7 applied to a further molybdenum disc 6 is then applied under pressure to the gold-semi-conductor eutectic 5, and the whole heated. The faces of the silver layer 7 and of the eutectic 5 which are to contact one another are lapped before they are joined. A raised, e.g. honeycomb, pattern may be impressed in the silver layer 7 before it is lapped. The solid lapping agent may be aluminium oxide or silicon carbide. The glycerine may be thinned with ethyl alcohol or methyl alcohol. The agent and glycerine are washed off after lapping by distilled water, which may be warmed. Alcohol may be used for re-washing.
