Abstract
996,693. Hand grenades and fuzes therefor. MEFINA S.A. May 25, 1964 [June 14, 1963], No. 21455/64. Heading F3A. A hand grenade with an explosive charge 46, a detonator 6 and a locking pin 15 has a slowburning fuze 7 initiated by a spring action striker 8 and a primer 30 attached to a carrier plate 31 which moves, when released, with a delay mechanism to an armed position. The grenade comprises a plastics body 1 joined by cement or high-frequency welding to a closure 2 which has a tubular part 4 extending to support a detonator 6 at its free end 5. Along passages 13, 14 in the part 4 is a sprung steel locking pin 15 one branch 18 of which has a bent end 19 engaging the shoulder 9 of the striker 8 which moves along a cylindrical bare 10 in the part 4 under the action of a spring 11. The other branch 17 of the locking pin 15 is located (Fig. 2) against a toothed sector 34, which is pivoted about an axis 35 and constrained to move under the action of a spring 36, and to mesh with a pinion 37 pivoted at 38 and co-operating with an escapement mechanism 39, 40. A peg 33 on the toothed sector bears against the carrier plate 31 and holds this plate back against a spring 3 with the primer 30 out of alignment with the slow burning fuze 7 and the detonator 6. To operate the grenade, a cover 24 is removed by pressing lugs 28 clear of a stud 29 on the body 1 and turning so that a protrusion 27 clears a groove in the closure 2; a chain 22 connected to the pin 15 is pulled so that the bent end 19 of the pin 15 draws back the striker 8 with it until the end 19 springs into an enlarged portion 20 of the passage 14 and the pin 8 returns under the action of the spring 11 to ignite the slow-burning fuze 7. Withdrawal of the pin also clears the end 17 from the toothed sector 34 which rotates until the peg 33 clears the carrier plate 31 to allow this to rotate clockwise as seen to align the primer 30 with the slow burning charge 7 and the detonator 6. A metal bush may be attached to threads 48 on the body 1 to modify the disintegration characteristics. A modified end cover 24 is also described.
