Abstract

996,470. Baffles. B.M.H. ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 23, 1963 [Dec. 24, 1962], No. 48587/62. Heading F4W. A baffle for a water heater having a combustion chamber particularly for use in converting a solid fuel boiler to oil or gas firing, surrounded by a water jacket, comprises a longitudinal support member 3 and a plurality of plates 2 each of which is provided with an aperture through which the support member can pass, said plates being arranged on the support member to form at least one baffle 1 comprising a number of superposed plates in contact, the shape and surface area of said baffle being variable by adjusting the position of one or more of said plates with respect to the other plates. In the form shown, a brass stem 3 supports three baffles 1 separated by mild steel collars 4 and retained in position by a nut 6. The base of the stem 3 is screwed into a cast iron flame spreader 5. The baffles may be spaced apart by 1 to 3 inches and each may include about 20 plates. The aperture in each plate 2 may be in the form of an elongated slot, or there may be a number of circular apertures, Figs. 3a-3c (not shown).
