996,053. Back-flushing of filters for liquids. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 9, 1961 [Oct. 8, 1960], No. 34557/60. Heading BID. Liquid under pressure enters at 15 and passes through a sheet of gauze (not shown) clamped between flanges 4, 5 to an outlet 17, pressurizing air in a plastic bottle 22 as it does so. For cleaning, inlet tap 16 is closed, whereupon the pressurized air forces filtrate downwards through the filter gauze to clean it. Liquid and residue may be discharged at 13, 14. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the bottle 22 and drain 13 are dispensed with. Instead, the inlet is in the centre of the lower dome 1, the outlet is in the centre of the upper dome 2, and the gas reservoir is constituted by the space around a pipe extending downwardly from the outlet within the upper dome 2. The lower end of the pipe may terminate just above the filter element (to prevent rupture by excess pressure) and in that case it is castellated.
