A filter drum 1 is mounted to revolve freely about a horizontal axis, a pipe 5 discharges effluent or gas inside the drum, thereby causing it to revolve, and a spray of liquid is directed from a tube 8 extending across the surface of the drum so that the residue and liquid collect in a trough 10 extending from inside the drum to a discharge gutter 12 outside one end of the drum. The drum may have a peripheral surface of a fine non-ferrous, or nylon, gauze.
