Abstract

541,560. Treating sewage; filters. REDDIE, L. N. (Griffin, J. D.). May 30, 1940, No. 9524. [Classes 46 and 111 Sewage in the condition in which it arrives at the sewage works, without previous sedimentation or bacteriological treatment is forced downwards through an enclosed trickling filter in association with air which is supplied under controlled pressure to the space above the filtering-medium. Sewage supplied to a sprinkler 13 and air from a blower 8 pass downwards through filtering medium 6 in a casing 3 and are separated in the space 9, the air passing direct to a second filter 10, while the liquid passes to a settling tank 15. Supernatant liquid from the settling tank 15 is delivered by a pump 16 to the filter 10 and settling sludge passes to a drying bed 20, to which sludge from a settling tank 18, which receives effluent from the filter 10, is also delivered.
