995,536. Yarns. KENDALL CO. May 20, 1964 [June 4, 1963], No. 20825/64. Heading D1W. A potentially elastic composite yarn comprises an elastic core strand 10- of natural or synthetic rubber, or spandex-, an inelastic retractable core strand or strands 12, which on being retracted stabilizes the yarn against elongation and which after the yarn has been knitted or woven into a fabric is either dissolved away or ruptured, and at least one wrapping strand 14. Strand 12 is preferably retracted by 40-50 per cent and thereby either reduces the extension of strand 10, if it is stretched, or causes strand 10 to buckle if initially unstretched. The retraction may be caused by heat-in the case of vinyl chloride/ vinyl acetate copolymer or plasticized cellulose acetate-, by moisture with or without heat-in the core of polyvinyl alchol-, or by chemical action. The effect of heat and moisture may gelatinize a polyvinyl alcohol strand and thus bond the wrapping strand 14 to core 10. The covering may be in the form of double-backed loops as shown and as produced by the method of U.S.A. Specification 3,078,654, or may comprise two helically wrapped strands. There may be a permanent, inelastic core strand-for example of nylon-to limit the elasticity of the yarn.
