A fabric comprises longitudinally extending substantially parallel convoluted threads and longitudinally extending frangible threads which are shorter than the convoluted threads and are breakable by extension of the webbing. The fabric may be woven from yarn 1 composed of crimped ground warp threads 2, e.g. of nylon or viscose, and frangible warp threads 3, e.g. of cotton, which are substantially free of crimp and in which the crimped ground warp threads may be wrapped around the frangible warp threads. The fabric may have a weft 4 of jute yarn. The ground warp threads may be convoluted due to the crimp imposed by interlacing during weaving. The substantially striaght frangible warp threads may lie between two rows of weft threads. Upholstery webbing may be produced by applying an elastomer yielding plastic composition 5, e.g. vulcanizable natural or synthetic rubber, to the fabric and converting the composition into an elastomer, e.g. by vulcanization. Calendered sheets 6 of rubber compound may be applied to the faces of the coated fabric prior to vulcanization, and the assembly then vulcanized. The coated fabric may be severed longitudinally into strips of webbing. The coated fabric or webbing may be extended sufficiently to break the frangible threads.
