Abstract

Voluminous elastic yarns are made from bifilar fibres comprising an elastomeric and a non-elastomeric fraction. Bifilar filaments spun from a solution of a polyester or polyether urethane segment polymer and from a solution of polyacrylonitrile are stretched and dried under tension, optionally crimped, and stapled. The bifilar fibres either by themselves or together with other non-elastomeric fibres for example polyacrylonitrile fibres-are carded and spun into yarn. The spun yarn either before or after being made up into a textile article is shrunk by treatment in boiling water or steam causing the elastomeric fraction to shrink and most of the points of union between the two fractions to break so that the non-elastomeric fraction forms coils around the elastomeric fraction. Alternatively the shrinking treatment may be applied before the carded fibres spun.
