Abstract

994,495. Laminates. EVERS & CO. A.B. Feb. 19, 1963 [Feb. 19, 1962], No. 6676/63. Heading B5N. An insulating material, e.g. roofing material comprises two layers of hard, oxidized asphalt 1, 2 bonded by a reinforcing layer 3 of fibres, e.g. glass fibres or asphalt in the form of fibres, and is surfaced by a layer of weatherproof plastics foil 5 and a layer of tear-resistant plastics foil 6. The foil 5 may be a polymer of a fluorine or fluorine and chlorine substituted ethylene, e.g. polyvinyl fluoride or a mixed polymer of vinyl fluoride and vinyl chloride and the foil 6 may be polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidine chloride. The layer 6 may be adhered to the asphalt by an adhesive layer 4 such as a natural or synthetic rubber based adhesive or may be adhered by treating the surface of the layer 6 with a solvent, by radio-active radiation or by oxidation, e.g. by A.C. glow discharge or flame treatment and then pressing the treated surface against the asphalt layer. When an adhesive is used rubber may be mixed in the asphalt layer to improve the bond.
