Abstract

Colloidal solutions from which artificial fibres may be spun (see Division B5) are made by mechanically and intimately admixing acid casein and urea for at least 30 minutes until the mixture is homogeneous, adding to the mixture a minor fraction of the volume of water which is necessary to form a colloidal solution and slowly stirring the resulting mixture for at least 90 minutes, adding to the stirred mixture the remaining fraction of said water volume necessary to form the said colloidal solution and stirring for at least 3 additional hours. The homogeneous mixture obtained by mechanically and intimately admixing acid casein and urea may be prepared in substantially anhydrous surroundings, or, if desired, in the presence of a capillary-active agent, e.g. ethanol. A solution of cellulose xanthate in carbon disulphide may be added to the ripened solution and intimately admixed therewith before spinning, and in this case the ratio by weight of the viscose to the casein and urea taken together is suitably from 3:1 to 0,5:1.
