In drafting apparatus, with an apron between the drawing and retaining rollers, at least a part of the length of the apron in the region of its end adjacent the drawing rollers is supported over a continuous length at either side of the line of the material being drafted and not along the line of the material itself. The whole or one quarter or one sixth of the length of the apron may be supported in this way. The apron concerned may be an upper or lower apron and a support plate therefor may be provided with a groove or slot; or the apron may have two support plates one on each side of the sliver path. When a second apron cooperates with the apron, that too, may be similarly supported by a grooved or dotted plate or two separate plates; further, the roller around which the apron passes adjacent the drawing rollers, and if desired, the roller at the opposite end of the apron, may also be recessed in line with the sliver. In Fig. 1, a lower apron 20 of a two-sliver unit passing around rollers 22, 23 is tensioned by a freely-hanging roller 28 and driven by a roller 21. The apron is supported by a plate 40 secured to side plates 24 in which the rollers 22, 23 are journalled, the plates being attached to the machine frame 27 by pins 25 in slots 26. In the path of each sliver, the plate has a groove, the rollers 23, 24 being also grooved, the grooves being wider than the corresponding conductors 2, 5 and 7. Several ways are described whereby the sliver is pressed against the lower apron. (a) In Fig. 1, a second apron 31 is provided; it passes freely over rollers 32, 33 and over a support plate 34, the rollers and plates being mounted in side-plates 35 located by pins 36 in the frame 27 and constituting a recovable unit. Pressure is applied to this assembly by conventional means. (b) In Fig. 4, a series of rollers 50.. 53 is journalled in plates 55 carrying the grooved plate 30, and the rollers 22, 23, and having lugs 60, 61 resting on a bar 62 and extensions 63 engaging the ends of the tensioning roller, the whole assembly constituting a removable unit. (c) In Fig. 6, the plates 55 have upward extensions 72 carrying a pin 71 on which is hinged a plate 71 adjustably loaded at 73. (d) In Fig. 7, not shown, a similarly hinged plate loaded by interchangeable weights, has hinged thereto a second loaded plate shorter than the first, whereby the parts of the apron may be differently loaded.
