993,171. Bending. HILGERS MASCHINEN-UND APPARATE BAUANSTALT m.b.H. July 12, 1962 [July 21, 1961], No. 26833/62. Heading B3E. A method of bending tubes, bars or the like comprises clamping the forward end of the tube, nearest the bending tool, to the tool and entraining it thereby during the rotational movement which causes the bending, the rear straight portion of the tube being subjected to the action of a force which acts in the longitudinal direction of the said portion in the direction towards the bending tool, the magnitude of the said force, or of the pressure caused thereby in the tube, being varied during the course of the bending operation. A tube 16, which may be fitted over a mandrel 15, is clamped at its forward end to a former 10 by an hydraulic device 12. A slide 13 presses the tube 16 against the former 10 as the former 10 rotates, and the tube bends therearound. The rear of the tube is clamped between toggle operated jaws on a slide 19 moved along a guide rail 18 towards the former 10, during bending, by hydraulic cylinder means 23. The slide 19 carries a cam 25 which acts on a valve 26 in discharge duct 27 of the cylinder 23 so that pressure applied by the cylinders 23 decreases as the bending operation progresses.
