Abstract

Compounds of the general formula:-<FORM:0992959/C2/1> wherein each R1 is the same or different and is an alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl group are obtained by subjecting to isomerization by heating, e.g. at 200 DEG C., a compound of the formula <FORM:0992959/C2/2> wherein each R1 is as defined above. An example is given in which tetrameric chlorophosphazene is dissolved in dry pyridine, dry ethanol is added to the solution (cooled to 0 DEG C.), the mixture diluted with dry ether, the precipitated pyridinium chloride removed by filtration and the filtrate treated to recover an ester of Formula II in which each R1 is ethyl which is then heated at 200 DEG C. for 3 hours to form a compound of Formula I in which R1 is ethyl. The compounds of Formula II may be obtained by reacting tetrameric chlorophosphazene with an alkanol, a ralkanol or cycloaliphatic alcohol in the presence of an acid acceptor, e.g. pyridine or a metal alkoxide, the reaction being conveniently carried out in an inert organic solvent, e.g. ether or dioxane.
