Abstract

1323020 Pyrrolinones LONZA Ltd 31 Dec 1971 [25 March 1971] 60968/71 Heading C2C Pyrrolinones (or their hydrohalide salts) of the general formula in which R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different are H atoms or aryl, substituted aryl or heterocyclic radicals, or R 1 may also be a straight-chained or branched C 1-12 alkyl radical, are prepared by reacting a γ-haloacetoacetamide of the general formula in which R 2 has the same meaning as above and X is a halogen atom, with an amine of formula R 1 NH 2 , in which R 1 has the same meaning as above, at a temperature of 70-110‹ C., in the presence of an inert organic solvent able to dissolve the reaction components. The free pyrrolinone may be liberated from its hydrohalide salt by treatment with an alkaline reagent.
