Abstract

991,628. Bearings. UNITED STATES TIME CORPORATION. Jan. 12, 1962 [Jan. 12, 1961], No. 1192/62. Heading F2A. In a timekeeping device lubricated by a liquid lubricant having a retaining cavity 15 therefor and comprising a rotating shaft 2 having a bearing surface at its end 2a in the cavity and a material having a high-contact angle relative to the lubricant, this material is secured on to the shaft 2 adjacent to the bearing surface and is of high resistance to deterioration by cleaning solvents, the lubricant in the cavity 15 being thus prevented from migration up the shaft 2 by the material. The material may form a washer 18 on the shaft 2 where shown, is deformable, and has an internal diameter less than the outer diameter of the shaft neck. It is compressively biased against the shaft 2 by being within the recess 17. Further creepage is prevented by a washer 12 at the top of the shaft 2 and washers 20 and 21. The highcontact-angle material may also be coated on the shaft 2, e.g. on the ends thereof.
