Abstract

The invention comprises imidazo-[1,2-a -]-pyridines of the formula <FORM:0991589/C2/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 alkoxy radical, R2 is a hydrogen atom or a dialkylaminomethyl group of the formula <FORM:0991589/C2/2> wherein R4 and R5 individually represent alkyl groups or, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a five or six-membered heterocyclic ring such as pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino, piperazino, methyl-piperazino or (b -hydroxyethyl) piperazino and R3 is a C1-4 alkylmercapto alkylsulphoxy or alkylsulphonyl group; and acid-addition salts thereof. The compounds are prepared by reacting a 2-aminopyridine of the formula <FORM:0991589/C2/3> with an o -halogeno-acetophenone of the formula <FORM:0991589/C2/4> following the conditions of the Tschitschibabin reaction and, if desired, condensing the resulting product with formaldehyde and an amine of the formula <FORM:0991589/C2/5> following the conditions of the Marnich reaction. Pharmaceutical compositions for oral or parenteral administration having antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity comprise a compound of the invention together with a compatible pharmaceutical carrier or excipient.
