Process for the manufacture of [1,2-alpha] imidazopyridines, and their acid addition salts, of the general formula: **(See formula)** wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical or a lower alkoxy radical at positions 5, 6, 7, 8 of the imidazopyridine nucleus; R2 is a hydrogen atom or a dialkylaminomethyl group of the formula: **(See formula)** wherein R4 and R5 individually represent alkyl groups or, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, such as pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino, piperazino, methylpiperazino or beta-oxietilpiperacino; R3 is an alkylmercapto, alkylsulfoxy or lower alkylsulfonyl group, in positions 2', 3', 4'of the benzene nucleus, characterized in that it comprises the reaction of a 2-aminopyridine substituted with a group represented by R1, with a halogen-acetophanone, substituted in the phenyl ring with a group represented by R3, following the conditions of the Tschitschibabin reaction, thus obtaining the products of the general formula where R2 = H and condensing these products with formaldehyde and amines, following the conditions of the reaction Mannich to obtain the products of the general formula where R2 is a dialkylaminomethyl group as indicated above.
