Abstract
Compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0879954/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is an acyl or aralkyl residue optionally substituted by halogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy groups, R2 is a bivalent straight or branched chain alkylene group of 2-5 carbon atoms and R3 and R4 are C1-C4 alkyl groups which together with the adjacent N atom may form a heterocyclic ring, such as a pyrrolidine, piperidine, morpholine or imidazole ring, are prepared by reacting a phthalazone of the general formula <FORM:0879954/IV (b)/2> in the form of their alkali-metal salts with haloalkylamines of the general formula <FORM:0879954/IV (b)/3> Salts may be formed with penicillins and with other acids. An iodomethylate is also described. The phthalazones used as starting materials are prepared by reacting hydrazine with o-benzylbenzoic acid, m-tolulyl-o-benzoic acid. benzalphthalide, naphtholbenzalphthalide, p-chloro-or p-methoxybenzalphthalide (prepared from p-chloro- or p-methoxyphenyl acetic acids and phthalic anhydride respectively) or benzal-4(5)-chlorophthalide (from phenylacetic acid and 4-chlorophthalic anhydride).
